LED Grow Lights and A Low-Down on LEDs

LED stands for light emitting diode. The most popular use of LEDs is in lighting, most especially in the form of the LED grow light. They are also used in traffic lighting, aviation lighting and lights that are concerned with vehicles like brake lamps and the indicator lights. LEDs in the form of infrared LED light are used as one of the main components in making remote controls work, whether they are for television, DVDs or stereos. The kind of lights that you see used in aquariums are also LEDs. The reason why they are used so extensively is because of the many advantages that they hold.

To make it easier to understand, take the example of an LED grow light. An LED bulb is preferred as the main source of light by the vast majority of horticulturalists as opposed to other types of light sources that can be used instead, including high pressure sodium lamps, fluorescent grow lights and combination HPS/MH lamps. The reasons for this are many. For one thing, an LED bulb is very cost efficient as well as energy efficient. It is quite true that an initial investment in LED grow lights can seem huge and may even put some people off, but the fact is that they last so long that the money just makes itself back. Some high quality full spectrum LED grow lights will actually last over fifteen years, because they have life spans of at least 50,000 hours.

The energy efficiency comes from the fact that an LED light will give off more light per watt when you compare it to say, incandescent lights. Even if the LED light is very small in size, it won't interfere with its performance. The efficiency level will remain the same regardless of how big or small the LED light is. Another advantage of such grow lights is that they can emit light of any color that is required and obviously that leads to lower costs because only that particular light spectra is utilized that is needed. In addition to this when you switch on an LED grow bulb, it will turn on immediately and unlike other light sources it will give off very little heat. In fact you can touch the surface of a switched on LED light without worrying about burning your hands. So again energy efficiency is enhanced and brought into play.

One thing that anyone interested in purchasing an LED grow light should keep in mind is that you should never look around for lower priced LED bulbs. When it comes to an LED bulb for example low price is pretty much synonymous with low quality. If you want to grow healthy strong plants that flower and fruit as they should, don't skimp on money. Buy only high quality LED grow lights that will ensure a return on your capital. Go to a reputable retailer and ask for advice if you are not sure which brand to go with or what power your LED grow light should be.
