You finally are considering building a storage shed. You have just realized that you have all sorts of extra stuff cluttering up your house and you need to get rid of it. Maybe you don't have a lot of extra stuff, or perhaps you have a small lawn or just don't like large buildings in your backyard. A small shed might just be perfect for you.

Your lawn could be big enough for a big storage shed or two, but you wish to maintain the spacious look of your backyard. Besides, you do not have many possessions to store in the shed anyways, just a little clutter here and there. Small storage sheds are very useful in storing garden hand tools, recycling bins, or even plants and flowers you need to keep and preserve. Sometimes called mini-sheds, horizontal or vertical sheds, small storage sheds are almost like furniture that takes up a small corner of your garden. In fact, they can be as decorative as they are functional.

Mini-sheds are the bigger version of small storage sheds. They are useful for storing equipment as big as bikes as well as you wheelie bins and recycling boxes. Vertical storage sheds are like large outdoor weatherproof cupboards that are great for storing your handy but a little bigger garden tools such as spades, shovels, fork and other long garden tools. They also provide some shelves for the gardening gloves and flower pots.

Equally popular are horizontal storage sheds which look like an oversized toy box. The lid of a horizontal storage box is usually hinged, levered or roller style for easy access. Often, this type of small shed is used for storing deck chairs, barbecues. Similar to large sheds, small sheds may be made of timber, heavy duty plastic or metal. The easiest to set-up is the plastic storage box while the metal and timber sheds require minimal flat-pack construction skills.

Of course, these small shed kits also come with easy to follow step-by-step building instructions. If, however, you have time and the skills, you may start from scratch in building a small storage shed using a set of shed plans. It will give you the opportunity to employ the style, size and color scheme that you want. You might think of considering the color scheme of your lawn or garden in choosing the color scheme of your small shed. Plastic and metal sheds have limited colors, but with timber sheds you have the freedom to paint your small shed with the color that complements your property. Before finally buying or constructing your small shed, do not forget to consider the size of the tools and equipment that you intend to store and secure.
